To support his nonprofit, Chapman launched The Human Gathering, an exclusive event touting a high-profile network that included the "Office" star Rainn Wilson and Dr. In a 2015 podcast appearance, Chapman joked that he'd been told he could "sell melting ketchup popsicles to a bride on her wedding day." While some called his frenetic energy and colorful stories unnerving, many more have been charmed by them. He speaks like an artillery bombardment: a volley of name-drops, war stories, and philosophical musings landing with such speed and force that no one has time to ask questions. Still baby-faced at 41, Chapman dresses like a cowboy, sweet-talks like a salesman, and carries himself with the bravado of a kid who outgrew his bullies but still has something to prove. Chapman, who says his childhood included a dozen suicide attempts before age 16, now proudly estimates he's prevented more than 4,000 youth suicides. Yet he says he overcame his trauma to build a multimillion-dollar company and launch his own nonprofit, A Human Project.
At one point, he says, he was simultaneously on 25 medications that were destroying his internal organs. Chapman says he was forced to sleep in a dog kennel, tied to a chain-link fence in the middle of a river, and used as a sexual prop by groups of men.
He was abandoned by his father, Dog the Bounty Hunter, when he was a year old, he said, and suffered horrific abuse as a child. They could "act like a victim," he said, letting their past destroy their lives. He encouraged them to take hold of their own destinies. "We're about to talk about some very real things," he told the group around a campfire, his voice ringing out over the crackle of flames.
